The International Association of General Motors Automotive Service Educational Programs (IAGMASEP) is an association of colleges and schools in four countries dedicated to providing high quality automotive service educational experiences to entry level technicians for General Motors dealerships. Each school is accredited to deliver automotive instruction and award associate's degrees or similar. Participation in the association is voluntary but member schools must be approved by General Motors to deliver the required embedded course content.
General Motors launched the GM Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) in 1979. It was the first partnership between an OEM and community colleges to develop technicians. GM ASEP has grown to partnerships with 55 schools in the US; expanded to Canada, Ecuador, and China. Since its inception, GM ASEP has provided over 17,000 entry level technicians to participating GM dealerships.
GM ASEP is unique in that the schools have formed their own 501(c)3 non-profit, IAGMASEP (International Association of GM ASEP Schools). The IAGMASEP association has members from schools in US and Canada.
The association has regional meetings each spring, and an international conference each fall. The fall conference includes technical speakers, GM representation, and sharing of best practices. The association will hold its annual business meeting during the fall conference.
The Association provides the schools with a single voice to General Motors to provide input on the program. The purpose of the organization is to form a permanent, independent, professional association of representatives from the colleges and schools participating in the delivery of General Motors automotive educational programs, to facilitate communication among the membership and to promote the sharing of ideas.
All other OEM’s also have copied the essence of the program and have launched their own initiatives. For more information on GM ASEP, to find member institutions or information for dealers, please visit the official GM ASEP website.
